COMPETITION SCHEDULES WILL BE SENT TO TEACHERS OF THE PIANISTS ON OCTOBER 4TH. 

AGE DIVISIONS

Pianists of all various ages (as of October 26, 2024) are eligible to compete in one of six age divisions:

Division 1
8 and under. Total playing time cannot exceed 5 minutes. Registration Fee: $65
Division 2
9-10 years. Total playing time cannot exceed 6 minutes. Registration Fee: $70
Division 3
11 to 12 years. Total playing time cannot exceed 7 minutes. Registration Fee: $75
Division 4
13 to 14 years. Total playing time cannot exceed 8 minutes. Registration Fee: $80
Division 5
15 to 16 years. Total playing time cannot exceed 9 minutes. Registration Fee: $85
Division 6
17 years and older. Total playing time cannot exceed 10 minutes. Registration Fee: $90

REPERTOIRE

OPEN REPERTOIRE (PIANO SOLO WORKS ONLY). No chamber or concerto works. While there is no penalty for pianists exceeding the TOTAL playing time for each Age Division, time keeper will STOP the performance abruptly when maximum time allotment is reached. No edits, cuts or trimming any of the works will be permitted.

All pieces must be performed memorized. Music must be presented to the adjudicator with measure rows numbered. 

Pianists may play any published solo work(s) by any living or deceased composers of any time era. Pianists must use standard published repertoire (This refers to music printed for distribution and sale and available through the general market in printed form with legal copyright printed on the music). Participants must use legally-obtained music that is available to the general public. Downloaded music from public domain (i.e., imlsp.org) are acceptable. Music purchased from a legal internet source meets the criteria if it is accompanied by copyright and proof of purchase information. All repeats and Da Capos can be omitted. Loose papers are not permitted. Please put into binders or presentation folders. 

PRIZES & RECOGNITION

CERTIFICATES:
Adjudicator will write their feedback on the back of personalized participation certificates, suitable for framing.

MEDALS:
Exceptional pianists may receive Gold, Silver, Bronze medals or Honorable Mention Certificates. Because this is a competition, no more than 50% of the total number of competition registrants can be awarded a medal.

SCHEDULE:
Please keep the ENTIRE DAY open and available. You may NOT request a time range. Competition will start at 9:15 pm and end at 4:15 pm. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of your group time.

CONDUCT:
For everyone's benefit, please keep voices to a whisper. Video recording of your child is permitted. Cameras can only be positioned BEHIND the adjudicator's peripheral vision. No infants are allowed in the competition room.

Performers are welcome to stay and watch each other perform or may leave after performing. Results will be posted by 10 pm on our website.

This is a formal event and proper formal attire should be worn.   No T-shirts, sweats or flip-flops allowed. Warm-ups pianos are not provided.

2024 Adjudicators

Dr. Renato Fabbro

Dr. Renato Fabbro
IN-PERSON ADJUDICATOR
Pianist Renato Fabbro completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rice University as a Bass Fellowship recipient. His principal teachers were Larry Graham, Angela Cheng and John Perry. Dr. Fabbro has performed at the Aspen, Sarasota, Boulder Bach, Astoria and Colorado Mozart Festivals. He has performed chamber music recitals with acclaimed violinist Frank Huang and Northwestern University clarinet professor Steven Cohen. As part of the Martingale Ensemble, he recorded music of Claude Debussy and Gustav Mahler with members of the Oregon Symphony for the MSR Classics label. He has judged many competitions, including the Canada West Performing Arts Festival, MTNA Northwest and Southwest Division, Russian Chamber Music Foundation of Seattle, NSA International, Silver State, Musicians West, Charleston International, Chopin Northwest, Vancouver Kiwanis, Northern Nevada Steinway Festival, Seattle International Piano Festival, Washington Outstanding Artist, Spokane, Musicfest Northwest, Seattle Steinway, Portland Young Pianists and Texas Music Teachers Association State Performance Competitions. He was a piano professor at the University of Portland and also taught at Marylhurst University and at the University of Texas at San Antonio Summer Music Institute. He was invited to give master classes for the Boise Tuesday Musicale, Musicfest Northwest, North Idaho Music Teachers Association and at the Nevada School of the Arts as part of their master class series.

Dr. Fabbro won the Adeline Rosenberg Memorial First Prize in the Fort Collins Symphony National Young Artist Competition as well as first prizes in the Grand Junction Symphony National Young Artist Competition, Colorado University Honors Competition and others. He has also won prizes and awards in the Lee Piano Competition, MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition and Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition. He has been a featured soloist with the Oregon Symphony, Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony, Grand Junction Symphony, Coeur d'Alene Symphony and Colorado University Orchestra.   

His students have won top prizes in many competitions, including First Prize and Third Prize in the MTNA National Finals and three other MTNA national finalists. Other student awards include the Most Exceptional Performer prize at the Charleston International Piano Competition, two Grand Prize awards at the Nevada School of the Arts International Piano Competition and first prizes in the Mondavi Center National Young Artist Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Stillman Kelley Award, Bellagrande International Music Competition, Idaho MTNA Piano Competition and multiple first prizes in the Coeur d'Alene Symphony National Young Artist Competition, Vancouver Symphony National Young Artists Competition, Steinway & Sons Piano Competition, Portland Young Pianists Competition, Washington Outstanding Artist Competition, Oregon MTNA Piano Competition (21 state winners across Junior, Senior and Young Artist divisions), Spokane Piano Competition, Central Oregon Symphony Young Artists Competition, Monday Musical Club Scholarship Competition, Wiscarson Competition, Beaverton Symphony Young Artists Competition, Eugene Symphony Young Artist Competition, Portland Youth Philharmonic Concerto Competition, American Fine Arts Festival International Concerto Competition, Oregon Sinfonietta Concerto Competition and top prizes in the New Orleans Piano Institute International Competition and New York Debut Young Musicians Competition, among others. His students have also been accepted into top piano performance degree programs, including Oberlin Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, Indiana University, Peabody Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music and Rice University Shepherd School of Music.

Dr. Fabbro is competition director for Bellevue Symphony and advisor to the Pacific Piano Competitions. 

Dr. Julia Lee

Dr. Julia Lee
Portland State University

IN-PERSON ADJUDICATOR
Julia Hwakyu Lee is the newly appointed head of the piano program at Portland State University. Previously, she served on the faculty at the University of Portland, Southern Utah University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Lee’s many prizes and awards include being the Chamber winner in the Niagara International Music Competition in Canada, Gold Medal in the Hankuk Ilbo Competition in Korea, Beethoven Competition in Wisconsin-Madison, and a fellowship recipient in the Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Michigan. She has been a soloist with the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony, Ulsan Chamber Orchestra, University of Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, Korean I Musici Chamber Orchestra, Portland's Columbia Symphony, and University of Portland Symphony Orchestra.

She presented lecture recitals at the College Music Society national conference and regional conference. As an active adjudicator, she has adjudicated the NW Chopin Competition and Simon-Fiset Competition in Seattle, WA, including festivals in Portland and Salem, OR. She has participated in master classes with Leon Fleisher, Richard Goode, Claude Frank, Paul Badura-Skoda, Gary Graffman, Russell Sherman, and John O'Conor.

Her students have succeeded in many competitions, including numerous MTNA state competitions, 2nd place in MTNA’s National competition, 1st place in Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA)’s Solo & Ensemble competitions, and Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Numerous students have won soloist competitions and performed with orchestras in Wisconsin, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. Additionally, her students have gone on to secure faculty positions at prestigious institutions such as the University of Portland, Linfield College, and Clark College.

Dr. Lee received her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Wisconsin, Master in Music from Korean National University of Arts, and Bachelor in Music from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea.

Mikhail Korzhev

IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL COMPETITION ADJUDICATOR
Mikhail Korzhev, a pianist that “projects strength, atmosphere and the ability to tangle even the knottiest passages…” (International Record Review) is equally active as a solo recitalist, a performer with various chamber groups, a soloist with orchestras, and as a recording artist. His latest CD recordings, the two volumes of a Complete Piano Concertos by Ernst Krenek in collaboration with English Symphony Orchestra and Kenneth Woods were released by Toccata Classics in 2016 and 2017 to enthusiastic reviews in Gramophone, Diapason and other publications, made it to the “want list” of Fanfare magazine, became one of “10 Best Contemporary Records of the Year” by The Times (London), and in December 2017 made it to the list of “Top 10 Best Classical Records of the Year” by Forbes magazine. In September 2017 Korzhev became a recipient of a prestigious Anassilaos Prize, the annual award for the achievements in Arts and Sciences given by the local government of the province of Calabria (Italy).

Korzhev collaborated with several distinguished conductors: Sergiu Commissiona, Carlo Ponti Jr. and others, his chamber music collaborations include performing with soloists of Russian National Orchestra, Mladi Chamber Orchestra, Lyris String Quartet, and members of St. Petersburg and Tokyo String Quartets among others. His collaborative work was highly appreciated by Eugenia Zukerman, Richard Stolzman, Oleh Krysa and other noted musicians. Korzhev’s performances received a high critical acclaim from American and European press: ”The young Russian pianist… displayed a notable technical mastery which allowed for passionate moments of ardent lyricism as well as wonderful purity and fluency…” (Momento Sera, Rome).”Korzhev belongs to that exclusive club of super musicians…he already performs like a keyboard legend…he is a major talent.” (Salt Lake Tribune).

His particular interest in contemporary music has lead Korzhev to participate in the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition in 2005, which had the emphasis on the music of Ernst Krenek. As a winner of that competition Korzhev gave a recital in the Vienna’s Konzerthaus about which the Wiener Zeitung wrote: “Korzhev obviously has a lot of affection for Krenek’s style… brings out well the dramatic qualities of his music…” Following the success of his Vienna debut Korzhev recorded a CD of Krenek’s piano music, released by Phoenix Edition/Naxos in 2008 that became an instant top seller and received several very enthusiastic reviews in the press.

Korzhev’s discography also includes three CD recordings featuring compositions for solo piano and chamber works by a prominent English composer Gerard Schurmann (in collaboration with Alyssa Park and Lyris string quartet) and a compilation of 40 classical standards for the online music library Megatrax.com.  

Korzhev combines his performing career with teaching. He taught at University of Southern California. Currently he is on the faculty of California State University at Fullerton and Chapman University. Since 2008 Korzhev is the faculty member at Beverly Hills International Music Festival. In the summer of 2009 he taught a summer course at the Bosendorfer Piano Academy in Vienna, Austria. 

Korzhev holds a doctorate in piano performance from University of Southern California, where he studied with Daniel Pollack. His previous teachers include Alexander Satz and Vera Khoroshina at Moscow Conservatory College.
